Did you read today? — Literacy Week comes to a Successful end at Sias IS

With the development of the information age, people are more and more used to fragmented reading content, and children have less and less time to enjoy reading. All kinds of intermittent pictures, texts and short videos satisfy the sensory stimulation of children, but they lose their ability to think, and their brains become accustomed to passive absorption instead of active watching and reading. Carrying long years of human civilization, literacy can not only develop children's interest in learning, enhance language ability and increase knowledge, but also help to cultivate imagination and help children develop the ability to think independently.

At Sias IS, we see deep reading as a very important learning tool. The instructional team of Sias IS organized a three-day Literacy Week, to experience different forms of reading, so that children can truly feel the fun of reading and develop good reading habits.

Read in Your Jammies Day Wednesday

Early Wednesday morning, children big and small, dressed in their pajamas, entered the school with a light heart and a favorite book. All kinds of pajamas are here, because this morning there's going to be a whole school pajama party. At the party, Wendy and Max read an interesting picture book to the children. Pajamas also represent bedtime for children, and bedtime reading is a great time to enjoy quiet time and read. By having pajama reading days, children can learn to enjoy reading in a relaxed state.

Buddy Reading Day Thursday

Good reading habits are inseparable from good campus atmosphere and culture. Staff from different departments come to classes on Thursday to read and share books with children. On one hand, Buddy Reading promotes the construction of a harmonious community on the campus, and on the other hand, it lets the whole campus jointly establish a good atmosphere for everyone to read. On this day, the children experienced poetry recitation from a custodian, Chinese picture book reading from a finance staff, and the story “the flight of the gazelle” shared by an admissions associate. All staff are working together to set a good example for the children.

Book Character DayFriday

Friday was the highlight of Literacy Week – Dress up as Your Favorite Character Day. On Friday morning we had a big costume parade where kids got to dress up as their favorite characters of a book and present and explain their favorite book to others. It helps to deepen children's understanding of the characters, as well as expands their knowledge by listening to other people's character stories.

Book SwapWednesday-Friday

Literacy Week concluded with a Book Swap, which was organized by the Student Council. All kids saw another way to share the fun of reading. By exchanging a book they have read with other students’, they can rediscover the value of an old book and choose a new one that interests them. Book Swap will become a school tradition and will be held regularly at Sias IS.

During Literacy Week, children could be found reading in all corners of the school, picking up new books and walking around reading as if no one was watching. The purpose of Literacy Week was not just to let children participate in these activities, but to let them understand the fun of reading, to develop the habit of reading, to calm down in this era of new media explosion, and to let their thoughts and imagination take off with the quintessence of mankind’s wisdom for thousands of years -- books.
